Qualifications and Courses
Whilst it is desirable to have 2 years anatomy and physiology based training and or practical experience, it is not always necessary. The ideal candidate must be well motivated, professional in appearance and manner and keen to learn. We have found that giving some self study material prior to attending allows those with even the most basic knowledge to successfully complete the requisite initial examination.
The course lengths vary according to the level of attainment that is desired. All courses share features of the syllabus in common, for example anatomy and physiology, professional ethics, hygiene and sanitation. The instructor’s course concentrates on the theory of learning and its delivery.
A typical foundation level course would consist of 5 days of classroom tuition in addition to 2 days
of practical clinical treatments. We offer courses up to Instructor level; these courses vary in their
demands on time and practical experience according to their degree of difficulty.
There is no statutory regulation for colon hydrotherapists. The International Association of Colon Hydrotherapy I-ACT and the Association and Register of Colonic Hydrotherapists ARCH are involved in setting the standard and monitoring the training of hydrotherapists. To register with either organisation you must complete a recognised training course at an approved centre.
To gain entry onto a recognised training course you need:
- to be qualified in conventional medicine (for example, a nurse or doctor); or
- to hold a degree or diploma in a body-based therapy, which includes in-depth training in anatomy and physiology.
- or in depth training in anatomy and physiology
There are no set working hours as most colon hydrotherapists have to be flexible to meet the needs
of their clients. The first sessions will take around 75 minutes, including a consultation and time for the client to change before and after the treatment. The treatment itself will last approximately 45 minutes.
Training programmes in colon hydrotherapy, which are recognised by I-ACT, will usually involve:
- further study of anatomy and physiology, focusing on the colon and digestive system
- nutrition
- cardio vascular system
- muscular skeletal structure
- colonic procedure (assisting and carrying out treatments)
- using and sterilising specialist equipment
- Business management.
Some colon hydrotherapists join the International Association for Colon Hydrotherapy I-ACT. They hold details of I-ACT approved course providers around the world. They have four qulaification levels; foundation, intermediate, advanced and instructor. Check the Association's website for details.
As a colon hydrotherapist, you may be able to join the British Register of Complementary Practitioners administered by the Institute for Complementary Medicine ICM.

What Equipment Do We Use?
Today there are two types of colonic devices available known as open systems and closed systems. Open systems deliver a constant, low-pressure stream of water through a small pencil sized speculum.
In open systems the patient naturally controls the filling and release of water from their colon as they would when going to the toilet. During an open system procedure the need for oversight is minimized, and patient privacy is increased.
Consequently we believe the open system to be by far the most therapist and client friendly system available today and as such we train exclusively on LIBBE® and Angel of Water® systems, these being the most common systems available on the market today.
Should you be considering the purchase of a system we would be more than happy to give you the benefit of our experience in the market to date.

The Future
Interest in alternative and complementary therapies has increased considerably in recent years. You may find opportunities to work in a variety of settings such as health resorts, gyms, salons, doctor's surgeries, natural health centres and spas. You may also be able to diversify, and work in other areas such as aromatherapy, and massage therapy.
You need to be prepared to market your business if you are self-employed. This will often involve working long hours at first until you have built up your reputation. Many colon hydrotherapists are self-employed, and charge an hourly rate which can be around £65 to £95 a session. This is unlikely to be clear profit and business costs, such as rent and materials, will need to be covered by this.
We are aware of many therapists earning in excess of £100,000 per annum. We would be surprised if an individual earned less than £60,000 per annum. In order that these figures can be achieved we offer, for those new to business, support and advice on an ongoing basis.
In recent years the colon hydrotherapy industry has gone from strength to strength. The introduction of revolutionary new treatment techniques and methods, celebrity endorsements and a general rise in interest in wellbeing have caused an unprecedented demand for the treatments. There can be no better time than at the beginning of a boom cycle to be involved in any industry. We expect our students armed with only a modicum of business experience to be able to attain earnings in excess of £60,000 per annum. Those who are employed will be significant income generators for their respective employers.
For those new to business, looking to change paths or perhaps enhance their existing business we offer a module on our courses which is devoted entirely to business generation and promotion, with ongoing support at no extra charge.
